Our Women

Every jar has
a pair of hands
behind it.

Gaon Se Ghar is made by women in the villages of Rajasthan – mothers, daughters and dadis who cook the way their families always have. This is their page.

Meet the makers

The hands behind your food

Hung out to dry, just like our papad. Each of our women has her own speciality.

  • Hands spooning freshly mixed achar into a glass jar

    The achar maker

Cuts, spices and fills every jar by hand, then lets it mature in the sun.

    Makes our Achar
  • Village women laying out rows of papad to dry in the sun

    The papad roller

Rolls each papad thin and round, then dries it on the rooftop.

    Makes our Papad
  • Stuffed red chillies with bowls of whole spices

    The spice keeper

Sun-dries chillies and seeds and grinds them in small batches.

    Makes our Masala
  • Golden dal spilling from a glass jar, ready for badi

    The badi maker

Whips the dal by hand and sets every badi out to dry.
